Women's Basketball Prepares for Coast 2 Coast Classic

Kurt Szymanski

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Following a double-digit win against the Central Michigan Chippewas, the Golden Grizzlies look to build on their victory in the Coast 2 Coast Classic, a multi-team event in Daytona Beach, Florida, featuring nine total programs.

Oakland has a good amount of momentum going into the holiday weekend event, largely behind the offense of junior guard Maddy Skorupski, who has averaged 26 points per game over Oakland's last two games. The Golden Grizzly defense has also taken a step up, forcing 17.8 turnovers per game on the season.

FRIDAY, NOV. 29 vs RICHMOND | 11 AM | BallerTV

The match against Richmond marks the first meeting ever between the Golden Grizzlies and the Spiders.

The Spiders enter the match on a hot streak, having won all six of their games so far this season. Behind the win streak is a high-powered Richmond offense that has averaged 80 points per game this season, shooting .528 from the field and .393 from beyond the arc.

Leading the team is Rachel Ullstrom, who has averaged a team-high 15 points and six rebounds while tallying 18 steals on the season for Richmond. Another player to look out for is Maggie Doogan, who has scored 11.8 points per game while averaging six rebounds.

Oakland's defense will be tested in this matchup, but it is more than capable of making other teams' best guards uncomfortable with the ball pressure and ability to disrupt passing lanes.

SATURDAY, NOV. 30 vs OLD DOMINION | 3:30 PM | BallerTV

The last game of the Coast 2 Coast Classic marks just the second time in program history that the Golden Grizzlies will face the Monarchs.

In their last matchup, during the 2017-18 season, the Golden Grizzlies defeated Old Dominion by a large margin, 80-59, in the Holiday Hoops Classic.

This season, Old Dominion has been dominant defensively, holding their opponents to a 35.3% field goal percentage and a 23.8% three-point percentage.

The Monarchs are currently on a four-game win streak, backed by play from En'Dya Buford and Simaru Fields. Buford leads the team in points, averaging 11.8 per game while leading the team in assists with 20 this season. Fields is right behind Buford, averaging ten points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
